This oil on canvas, was commissioned by the Town of Timberville, Virginia for their "Founder's Day". It depicts the town as it looked during a horse auction in 1898. I had two very small, old, black & white photos to work with, (and a magnifying glass!) I tried to pick out the more interesting characters and horses to paint. There are no women or children in the scene as this was a "men's only" event, women were home tending to the cooking, cleaning, chores, kids, etc. WOW! How times have changed!
