A few years back I was an, "artist-in-residence" at "Dollywood", in Tennessee for a summer. While there, I painted each day to demonstrate for visitors to the theme park. (I was in the section for the 1880's and wore a costume!) I needed more painting supplies one day and one of the directors at the park told me I had to go over the mountain to Gatlinburg to get them. She suggested going on a back road to avoid the horrible traffic. On my way I went on a winding two-lane road at the base of the mountains. Down there, the mountains go, it seems, straight up! I saw the scene I painted as I drove by. I only saw it for an instant, but, it registered in my head, so, I had to paint it! The old woman in the bonnet was getting water from the well-pump as her ancestors had done for a hindered years or so. Hard working folks down there, in a rough terrain to live. The cabin was at the base of the mountain, which went straight up behind it! Goats and an old hound-dog were in the front yard.
The Bible Scripture titles on this scene are:
"Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. She seeks wool and flax, and works willingly with her hands. Strength and honor are her clothing; she looks well to the ways of her household, and eats not the bread of idleness. Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman that fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates."'
