A herd of wild ponies graze on salt-grass in the marshes of the "Outer Banks" of North Carolina. Herds of these "ponies" roam freely from Maryland's Eastern shore islands down the coast to North Carolina. It is believed the horses were descendants of Spanish horses coming to the "New World" from Spain. The ships were wrecked in terrible storms along the coast, and the horses on board escaped! The horses have gotten smaller over the years to about the size of a larger Welsh pony. This is due to the fact they have little to eat but salt-grasses with little nutrition in it. They are hardy stock, and have weathered many harsh storms on the coast. As in the scene depicted in my painting, they were up to their stomachs in mud, and it didn't seem to bother them a bit as they grazed like they were in lush pasture! The Cattle Egrets stick close to pick at insects near, or on the ponies.
The Bible Scripture title on the scene is:
"But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. Who knows not in all these that the hand of the Lord has made them? In Whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind?"
- Job 12: 7 -10
